I got used to Scarlet’s “I were smiling at him” and “He were ‘bout to see my mug” diction. ![]() Normally, I would have hated it I mean, the entire book is written “incorrectly.” But I actually think it worked. It’s narrated in first person from Scarlet’s point of view, and let’s just say that Scarlet has some issues with her grammar. The first thing I noticed (and eventually came to like) about this book was the style Gaughen writes in. By page 10, I knew I was going to love Scarlet. It’s also very rare that I get all swoony over the main character’s love interest, especially if I get swoony in the first chapter. It is very rare anymore that I’m completely in love with a book halfway through the first chapter. Still, I am a romantic at heart, and while I appreciate when an author has the ability to make the pages sizzle, ultimately Iwant a story to deliver on emotional depth.
